Our Mission

To empower children with disabilities and their caregivers through educational advocacy and by promoting inclusivity.

Our Vision

To be 1. A catalyst and resource for change that makes Missouri education accessible and inclusive by tackling disability-related issues that are not adequately addressed; and 2. An inspiration to new groups and individuals to take up the cause of inclusivity, thus, widening our circle of impact beyond our own members.

Our Values

  • To effectively make change, we will be a nonpartisan, issue-led organization that welcomes and benefits people of all beliefs, abilities, diagnoses, and backgrounds.
  • We must empower ourselves and assist others in empowering themselves to fight for change for people of all abilities.
  • We must make ongoing efforts to be a diverse and inclusive group.
  • To effect change, we will work hard, build alliances, develop relationships, and carry out strategic campaigns.
  • In all our meetings, internally and with allies, we will engage in a rigorous practice of listening and communicating with the goal of building a team that works together and builds consensus while keeping in mind our mission and vision.
  • We support the good work of individuals and organizations championing disability rights prior to MoDE’s existence.
  • All our work and interactions will be done with honesty, openness, and integrity. We will acknowledge and address our mistakes, and periodically assess how best to achieve our mission with efficiency and respect for all.
  • Our fiscal stewardship must ensure that MoDE Foundation exists in perpetuity, or as long as we have disability justice work to do.

History

The MoDE Foundation, born from the vision of six mothers in June 2018, strives for a brighter future for children with disabilities. Grounded in the belief that individuals with disabilities deserve quality educational experiences and supports, the foundation emphasizes inclusion of all children with disabilities. Recognizing the need for a charitable organization to support statewide initiatives, MoDE Foundation officially became a 501(c)(3) organization in October 2018. Since then, it has expanded both officially, by strengthening its Board of Directors, and informally, by fostering volunteer engagement. Additionally, the foundation is dedicated to legislative advocacy, amplifying efforts to address disability and inclusion issues at the state level.
